How does one know?

When one is crazy about something and has his heart set on it for a long time, and if that prized possession seems attainable only by an uncertain freakish chance -- should one let go, accept the "reality" and move on to "better" things --- how does one know if there was a sliver of a chance, should they try harder or just let go?
